§ 2802 Water Rights Completion Deadlines

Key Takeaways

  • •This law is about old water rights claims started before December 19, 1914.
  • •If someone started using water legally before that date and kept working on it, they can still finish setting up their water use.
  • •The government will give them extra time to finish if they’ve been working hard and honestly on it.
  • •The extra time must be reasonable so they can actually complete their water project.

Example

A farmer started building a canal to water his fields in 1910 but didn’t finish by 1914. He kept working on it slowly over the years.

The government can give him more time to finish the canal and start using the water because he started before 1914 and didn’t give up.
