§ 25771 District Property Acquisition Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •A district can get land or stuff (like buildings or equipment) in different ways: buying it, getting it as a gift, renting it, or even taking it if they really need it (but they have to follow special rules).
  • •The district can only take or use land/stuff if it helps them do their job better.
  • •If the district doesn’t need the land or stuff anymore, they can sell it, rent it out, or get rid of it if they think it’s the best choice.

Example

A school district needs more space to build a new school because the old one is too crowded.

The district can buy an empty lot nearby to build the new school. If the owner doesn’t want to sell, the district might still get the land by following special rules (like paying a fair price). Later, if the district no longer needs the land, they can sell it to someone else.
