§ 57354 Detached Territory Financial Liability

Key Takeaways

  • •If a piece of land leaves a city or district, it still has to pay for any money owed by that city or district.
  • •The land can be charged with taxes, fees, or other costs to help pay off those debts.
  • •This rule applies even if the land is no longer part of the city or district.

Example

A neighborhood leaves a city to become its own town.

Even after leaving, the neighborhood still has to help pay for the city’s old debts, like money owed for building roads or schools. They might have to pay extra taxes or fees to cover these costs.
