§ 10296 Electronic Legal Material Preservation

Key Takeaways

  • •Official publishers must keep legal documents safe, whether they are digital or on paper.
  • •If the documents are digital, the publisher must make sure they stay unchanged, have backups, and can always be used.
  • •This rule helps make sure important laws and records don’t get lost or messed up.

Example

A government website stores important laws online.

The people in charge must protect these laws from being deleted or changed by mistake. They need backups in case the website crashes, and they must make sure the laws can always be read, even if computers change in the future.
