§ 10422 Animal Slaughter Valuation Process

This law tells how to figure out the price of a calm animal that gets slaughtered, using an appraiser from the department and the owner, and if they can't agree, the chief appraiser decides and that price is final.

Key Takeaways

  • •The animal's value is set by an appraiser from the department and the owner (or the owner's agent).
  • •If the two can't agree, the chief appraiser of the department decides the value.
  • •The decided value is final and cannot be challenged.

Example

A farmer has a calm cow that needs to be slaughtered. The farmer and a USDA appraiser try to agree on how much the cow is worth. They can't agree, so the chief appraiser steps in and sets the price.

The farmer and the USDA rep first try to set the cow's value together. When they disagree, the chief appraiser makes the final decision, and that price cannot be changed.
