§ 8208 Contractor Preliminary Notice Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If you're working on a big building project, the main contractor must tell you who owns the building and who is lending money for it if you ask.
  • •This helps people who work on the project (like suppliers or subcontractors) know who to talk to if they need to get paid.
  • •The rule started in 2011 but didn’t fully kick in until 2012.

Example

Imagine you’re a plumber working on a new house. You finish the job, but the main contractor hasn’t paid you yet.

You can ask the main contractor for the name and address of the house owner and the bank lending money for the project. This way, you know who to contact to make sure you get paid for your work.
