§ 70275 Annexation Hearing And Protests

Key Takeaways

  • •If most people in an area don't want to be part of a district, they can stop it by signing a protest.
  • •At least half of the registered voters in the area must sign the protest to stop the annexation.
  • •If the protest works, the board can't try to add the same area again for six months.
  • •The board decides if the area will benefit from joining, but a big protest can override their decision.

Example

A small town wants to join a nearby city to get better schools and roads. The city board holds a meeting to decide.

If half or more of the registered voters in the town sign a protest against joining the city, the board must stop the process. They can't try to add the town again for six months.
