§ 60042 District Tax And Fare Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •The district can't decide on its own to add new taxes like property or sales taxes.
  • •If most of the places in the district agree, they can ask voters to approve new taxes.
  • •If voters say yes, the district can collect fees to fix and improve roads and transit.
  • •The district can set prices for bus or train rides by voting on it.

Example

A city wants to fix potholes and add more buses.

The city can't just add a new tax. First, most of the cities in the area must agree to ask voters. If the voters approve, the city can then charge fees to pay for road repairs and better bus service.
