§ 28793 Board Ordinance Adoption Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •The board can make decisions through motions, resolutions, or ordinances.
  • •Most ordinances can't be passed right away—they need to wait at least 3 days after being introduced and must be voted on in a proper meeting.
  • •An ordinance needs more than half of the board members to vote 'yes' to pass.
  • •Most ordinances don't start working until 30 days after they're passed, except for urgent ones (like elections, taxes, or emergencies) which start right away if two-thirds of the board agrees.

Example

The board wants to pass a new rule about parking fees in the town.

They can't vote on it the same day it's introduced—they have to wait at least 3 days. Then, more than half of the board must vote 'yes' for it to pass. Even after it passes, people have to wait 30 days before the new parking fees start, unless the board says it's an emergency and two-thirds agree.
