§ 13661 Annexed Territory Debt Liability

Key Takeaways

  • •If a new area joins a special district, it has to help pay off the district's existing debts.
  • •The district can charge extra taxes or fees to the new area to cover these costs.
  • •These extra charges are on top of any regular taxes the district already collects.

Example

A small town joins a bigger school district that already has debt from building schools.

The town will now have to pay part of that debt, and the school district can add extra taxes to the town's bills to cover it.
