§ 13931 Annexation Tax Levy Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •After a new area joins a public agency, the agency can charge extra taxes or fees to pay for debts or promises made in the annexation deal.
  • •These extra charges are on top of the usual taxes the agency already collects.
  • •The money from these charges must be used only for what was agreed upon when the area joined.

Example

A small town joins a bigger city. The city promised to fix the town's old roads as part of the deal.

The city can charge extra taxes to the people in the town to pay for fixing the roads. This is on top of the regular taxes everyone already pays.
