§ 131106 Transportation Tax Revenue Allocation

Key Takeaways

  • •Money from special taxes must be used only for transportation things like roads, buses, or trains.
  • •The group that collects the tax gets to decide how to spend the money, but only on transportation stuff.
  • •They can take out money first to pay for the cost of collecting the tax before spending the rest.

Example

Your county adds a small tax on gas to pay for better roads.

The money from that gas tax can’t be used for schools or parks—only for fixing potholes, building new bus stops, or things like that. The county can take a little bit of the money to pay for the cost of collecting the tax, but the rest has to go to transportation.
