§ 131108 County Transportation Tax Bonds

Key Takeaways

  • •The county can ask voters to approve a sales tax to pay for transportation projects, like fixing roads or buses.
  • •If voters say yes, the county can borrow money (issue bonds) to pay for these projects, but only if the tax money can cover the loan and interest.
  • •The ballot must clearly say how much the tax is, how long it lasts, and how much money they plan to borrow.
  • •The ballot must also say who is in charge of the tax money—a local transportation group or a commission.

Example

Your county wants to fix potholes and add more bus routes, but it doesn’t have enough money right now.

The county asks voters to approve a 0.5% sales tax for 10 years. If voters say yes, the county can borrow $100 million to start the work immediately. The tax money collected over 10 years will pay back the loan plus interest. The ballot will say exactly how much the tax is, how long it lasts, and who is in charge of the money.
