§ 100060 Vta Board Composition

This law sets up a 12‑person board to run the VTA, telling who can sit on it and how alternates work.

Key Takeaways

  • •The board must have exactly 12 members.
  • •Two county supervisors plus an alternate, five San Jose officials plus an alternate, and five officials from the other county cities fill the seats.
  • •An alternate can vote only when the person they replace is absent.
  • •Appointees should, if possible, know a lot about transportation.

Example

The county board picks two of its supervisors and an extra supervisor as an alternate; the city of San Jose picks five of its council members (or the mayor) and an alternate; the other cities in the county each pick a council member or mayor to fill the remaining five spots.

When the VTA board meets, those chosen people make decisions about transit. If one of them can’t come, the alternate they named steps in and can vote for them.
