§ 50467 Affordable Housing Adaptive Reuse

Key Takeaways

  • •The government offers loans to help make affordable housing. You can use this money to turn old buildings into new homes.
  • •If the loan program also helps people buy homes, this rule still applies.
  • •Adaptive reuse means changing an old building into new apartments or homes.
  • •This rule only applies if the loan program doesn’t already have its own definition for adaptive reuse.

Example

An old office building is empty and not being used. A developer wants to turn it into apartments for people who need affordable housing.

The developer can apply for a government loan to help pay for changing the office building into apartments. The loan program must say that this kind of project is allowed.
