§ 17929 Affordable Housing Access Rights

Key Takeaways

  • •In buildings with both cheap and expensive apartments, everyone must use the same doors to get in and out.
  • •Everyone in the building must have the same access to shared spaces like pools, gyms, or parks—no keeping cheap apartments away from these areas.
  • •Cheap apartments can’t all be stuck on one floor or in one part of the building—they must be mixed in with the expensive ones.
  • •This rule is just reminding people of laws that already exist—it doesn’t change anything new.

Example

Imagine a big apartment building with a pool, a gym, and a nice lobby. Some apartments are cheap for people who don’t make a lot of money, and some are expensive for people who make more money.

The law says the people in the cheap apartments must be able to use the same front door, the same pool, and the same gym as the people in the expensive apartments. Also, the cheap apartments can’t all be on the top floor while the expensive ones are on the lower floors—they have to be spread out.
