§ 11209 Pharmacy Controlled Substance Delivery

Key Takeaways

  • •When strong medicines (like some painkillers) are delivered to a pharmacy, a pharmacist or approved person must sign for them right away.
  • •If the delivery doesn’t match what’s on the receipt (wrong type or amount), the pharmacy must tell the delivery company by the next workday.
  • •The delivery company must keep the receipt and any notes about mistakes for 3 years.
  • •Breaking these rules can get you in trouble with the law (like a fine or small crime).

Example

A delivery driver brings a box of strong pain pills to a pharmacy.

The pharmacist must check the box and sign a paper saying they got the right pills and the right amount. If the box is missing some pills, the pharmacy has to call the delivery company the next day to report it. The delivery company then has to keep that paper and any notes about the missing pills for 3 years.
