§ 110674 Pasteurized Egg Labeling Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •Eggs sold in stores must have the right labels if they are pasteurized (treated to kill germs).
  • •If the label is wrong or missing, the eggs are considered 'misbranded' and can't be sold.
  • •The rules for these labels are in another law (Section 27644.5) and the rules made by the government.

Example

You buy a carton of eggs at the store, and the label says 'pasteurized' but doesn't have the other required info.

The store could get in trouble because the eggs are misbranded—they don’t follow the labeling rules.
