§ 102635 Birth Certificate After Adoption

This law says the State Registrar must make a new birth certificate when they get an adoption report or a readoption order for a child who was born in California and already has a birth record.

Key Takeaways

  • •A new birth certificate is only made after an adoption report or a readoption order is received.
  • •The adoption report can come from any court in the U.S., a U.S. territory, or even a foreign country.
  • •The child must have been born in California and already have a birth record on file.

Example

A baby born in California is later adopted by a family living in New York. The New York court sends an adoption report to the California State Registrar.

When the registrar receives that report, they create a new birth certificate for the child that shows the adoption information.
