§ 102630 Adoption Reports Foreign Births

This law says that when a state gets an adoption paper for a child who was born in another state, DC, a US territory, or Canada, it must send that paper to the place where the child was originally born.

Key Takeaways

  • •Adoption reports for kids born outside the state must be sent elsewhere.
  • •The report goes to the birth‑registration office of the place where the child was born.
  • •This rule covers births from other states, the District of Columbia, US territories, and Canada.

Example

A family adopts a child who was born in Canada and the adoption court in their home state files the adoption report with the state registrar.

The state registrar will forward that adoption report to the Canadian birth registration office, because the child’s birth happened in Canada.
