§ 400 Vessel Appurtenances Definition

This law says that anything the owners put on a boat that helps it work or is needed for the trip counts as an “appurtenance.”

Key Takeaways

  • •Appurtenances are things that belong to the boat’s owners.
  • •They must be on the vessel.
  • •They have to be connected to the boat’s proper use or the purpose of the trip.

Example

A family puts a life jacket, a fishing net, and a GPS on their fishing boat before heading out to sea.

Because those items belong to the owners, are on the boat, and are needed for the fishing trip, the law says they are all “appurtenances.”
