§ 1140 Bay Pilotage Regulation

This law creates one state‑run system of ship pilots for Monterey Bay and the San Francisco, San Pablo, and Suisun bays to keep boats and people safe.

Key Takeaways

  • •The state will run a single pilot system for the listed bays.
  • •The purpose is to protect people, boats, and property.
  • •Having one system matches what ports around the world do and helps both foreign and U.S. ships.

Example

A big cargo ship wants to enter San Francisco Bay.

Because of this law, the ship must use a state‑licensed pilot who knows the waters, just like every other ship does, making the trip safer for the crew and the shore.
