§ 9037 Special Session Procedures

Key Takeaways

  • •If the Legislature is already in a special meeting on the same day a regular meeting is supposed to start, they can just keep the special meeting going.
  • •They can also decide to talk about the regular meeting topics during the special meeting instead of starting a new one.
  • •If they do this, the regular meeting won’t happen at all.

Example

Imagine your school has a special club meeting on the same day as a regular class. The teachers can decide to just talk about the class stuff during the club meeting and skip the regular class.

The Legislature can do the same thing—if a special meeting and a regular meeting are on the same day, they can just combine them and skip the regular one.

If the Legislature is convened in special session pursuant to this article on the date specified by the State Constitution for the convening of a regular session, the Legislature may convene in such regular session without adjourning the special session or it may provide by concurrent resolution that the subjects to be considered at the regular session may be acted upon at the special session, and in such case the regular session shall not be convened. (Added by renumbering Section 9038 by Stats. 1968, Ch. 312.)
