§ 56881 Commission Proposal Cost Determinations

Key Takeaways

  • •The law says that before making big changes to local services (like who provides water or trash pickup), the people in charge must check if the new way is cheaper or about the same cost as the old way.
  • •They also have to make sure the change makes it easier for people to know who is in charge and how money is being spent.
  • •If the change affects a specific area, they have to give that area a temporary name and describe where it is.
  • •If people don’t like the change, there’s a way for them to protest and say why they disagree.

Example

Imagine your town wants to switch from the current trash company to a new one. The people in charge have to check if the new company will cost less or about the same as the old one.

They also have to make sure the new company will make it easy for people to ask questions or complain if something goes wrong. If the change only affects one neighborhood, they have to name that neighborhood and say exactly where it is. If people in the neighborhood don’t want the new trash company, they can protest and explain why.
