§ 56737 Annexation Voter Approval Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If a city wants to add a new area with lots of people or valuable land, the people who already live in the city might get to vote on it.
  • •The new area must have either half the land value or half the voters of the city for this vote to happen.
  • •The vote is only for the people already living in the city, not the new area.
  • •This rule helps make sure big changes to a city are okay with the people who live there.

Example

A small town called Sunnyville wants to add a big neighborhood called Green Acres to its city limits.

If Green Acres has land worth half as much as all of Sunnyville or has half as many voters as Sunnyville, then the people of Sunnyville get to vote on whether to add Green Acres or not.
