§ 56759 City Annexation Voter Approval

• •If a city wants to add a big piece of land (with lots of value or voters), the people in the city get to vote on it too.
• •The land being added must have at least half the value of the city’s land OR half the voters to trigger this rule.
• •The vote happens in both the city and the area that wants to join—everyone gets a say.
• •This rule makes sure big changes don’t happen without asking the people who already live in the city.

A small town called Sunnyville wants to add a big neighborhood called Meadowland to its city limits. Meadowland has expensive houses and lots of voters.

If Meadowland’s houses are worth half (or more) of all the houses in Sunnyville, OR if Meadowland has half (or more) of Sunnyville’s voters, then Sunnyville’s current residents must vote on whether to let Meadowland join. It’s not just Meadowland’s decision—Sunnyville’s people get to say yes or no too.
