Imagine two small towns, Sunnyville and Green County, decide to join together to become one big Sunny-Green City-County. Before the merge, Sunnyville had its own mayor, police chief, and other workers. Green County also had its own workers doing the same jobs.

As soon as Sunnyville and Green County officially become Sunny-Green City-County, the old mayor, police chief, and other workers from both places must leave their jobs. They have to hand over their jobs to the new workers chosen for Sunny-Green City-County. But if the new rules say the old police chief can keep their job, then they can stay.

Immediately upon reorganization, all persons occupying or possessing the offices of each of the cities and the county shall surrender them to the proper officers of the city-county, except as may be otherwise provided in the charter. (Added by Stats. 1973, Ch. 972.)
