§ 51943 City-County Office Transfer

Key Takeaways

  • •When a city and county merge, all current workers in those jobs must step down.
  • •They have to give their jobs to the new city-county workers right away.
  • •Unless the new rules say some people can keep their jobs.

Example

Imagine two small towns, Sunnyville and Green County, decide to join together to become one big Sunny-Green City-County. Before the merge, Sunnyville had its own mayor, police chief, and other workers. Green County also had its own workers doing the same jobs.

As soon as Sunnyville and Green County officially become Sunny-Green City-County, the old mayor, police chief, and other workers from both places must leave their jobs. They have to hand over their jobs to the new workers chosen for Sunny-Green City-County. But if the new rules say the old police chief can keep their job, then they can stay.
