§ 27320 Recorder Document Endorsement

Key Takeaways

  • •When you give important papers to the recorder’s office, they must write down the exact time they got it, including the year, month, day, hour, and minute.
  • •The recorder must record the paper right away, along with any extra documents attached to it, like maps or certificates.
  • •The recorder gives each paper a special number, usually in order, but they can skip numbers if it helps get things recorded faster or if there are special instructions.

Example

You sell your house and give the deed to the recorder’s office to make it official.

The recorder writes down the exact time they received the deed and records it quickly. They also include any extra papers, like a map of your property, and give it a special number so it’s easy to find later.

§ 27320 Recorder Document Endorsement

When any instrument, paper, or notice authorized by law to be recorded is deposited in the recorder’s office for record, the recorder shall endorse upon it in the order in which it is deposited, the year, month, day, hour, and minute of its reception, and the amount of fees for recording. The recorder shall record it without delay, together with the acknowledgements, proofs, certificates, and prior recording data written upon or annexed to it, with the plats, surveys, schedules, and other papers thereto annexed, and shall note on the record its identification number. Efforts shall be made to assign identification numbers sequentially, but an assignment of a nonsequential number may be made if not in violation of express recording instructions regarding a group of concurrently recorded instruments, papers, or notices and if, in the discretion of the county recorder, that assignment best serves the interest of expeditious recording. (Amended by Stats. 2018, Ch. 467, Sec. 8. (SB 1498) Effective January 1, 2019.)
