§ 21151 Disability Retirement For Officers

Key Takeaways

  • •If certain workers (like police, firefighters, or some state employees) get hurt on the job and can't work anymore, they can retire early because of their injury, no matter how old they are or how long they've worked.
  • •This rule also covers some other workers if their boss agrees to it in their work contract.
  • •Some specific jobs, like crime lab workers or highway patrol dispatchers, are included in this rule.
  • •This rule doesn’t apply to some local safety workers or certain state safety workers unless their boss agrees to it.

Example

A police officer gets hurt in a car chase and can't walk properly anymore, so they can't do their job.

Because the officer got hurt at work, they can retire early and still get money to live, even if they’re not very old or haven’t worked for many years.
