§ 21150 Disability Retirement Eligibility

Key Takeaways

  • •If a worker gets hurt or sick and can't do their job, they can retire early if they worked for the state for at least 5 years.
  • •Some workers who chose different rules need to work 10 years before they can retire early if they get hurt or sick.
  • •If a worker started before 1985, they might only need 5 years of work to retire early, even with the different rules.
  • •Time worked for the state counts toward retirement, even if the worker didn’t get credit for it before.

Example

A firefighter gets badly injured while working and can’t fight fires anymore.

If the firefighter worked for the state for 5 years, they can retire early and get money to live on because they got hurt on the job.
