§ 1825 Foreign Bank License Surrender

Key Takeaways

  • •A foreign bank can give up its license to operate an office by handing it in with a report.
  • •If a foreign bank has more than one office, it can't give up just one license—it has to give up all of them.
  • •The license surrender usually takes effect after 30 days, unless the commissioner says otherwise.
  • •If there's a problem (like a pending case to take away the license), the commissioner decides when and how the surrender happens.

Example

A bank from another country has two offices in California and wants to close just one of them.

The bank can't just give up the license for one office—it has to give up both licenses or keep both. If it tries to give up one, the commissioner won't allow it.
