§ 2051 Endangered Species Protection

This law says the state knows some plants and animals are already gone and others are in danger, and that protecting them is important for everyone.

Key Takeaways

  • •Some fish, wildlife, and plants are already extinct because of human actions.
  • •Other species are at risk because their homes are being destroyed, over‑used, or affected by disease, predators, etc.
  • •These living things are valuable for many reasons—nature, education, history, fun, beauty, money, and science—so protecting them is a statewide concern.

Example

A forest near a town is being cut down, and the rare birds that live there start disappearing.

Because the law says the state cares about species that are threatened by habitat loss, the state would need to step in to protect the forest and the birds.

The Legislature hereby finds and declares all of the following: (a) Certain species of fish, wildlife, and plants have been rendered extinct as a consequence of man’s activities, untempered by adequate concern and conservation. (b) Other species of fish, wildlife, and plants are in danger of, or threatened with, extinction because their habitats are threatened with destruction, adverse modification, or severe curtailment, or because of overexploitation, disease, predation, or other factors. (c) These species of fish, wildlife, and plants are of ecological, educational, historical, recreational, esthetic, economic, and scientific value to the people of this state, and the conservation, protection, and enhancement of these species and their habitat is of statewide concern.
