§ 1367 Oak Woodlands Protection Agreement

This law tells the state board and the Department of Forestry to write a partnership agreement by April 1, 2002 that explains how to protect oak woodlands, how cities and counties should plan for them, where those plans go online, and how to work with other agencies.

Key Takeaways

  • •The board and the Department of Forestry must finish the memorandum by April 1, 2002.
  • •The memo must describe how to use money from the forest fund together with the California Forest Legacy Program.
  • •It must list what a county or city’s oak‑woodland plan must contain, like tree maps and canopy‑protection rules.
  • •All plans have to be posted online where the public and other agencies can see them.
  • •The memo must explain how to coordinate with other state programs, such as those fighting sudden oak death.

Example

A city wants to protect the oak trees in a local park.

The city must follow the checklist in the agreement – map all the trees, set rules for keeping oak canopies, plan how to fix any damage, and set up a way to check if the plan works. Once done, the plan is posted on a public website for anyone to see, and the city works with the state agency that fights sudden oak death.
