§ 66601 Lettuce Handler Referendum Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •This law only starts working if enough lettuce sellers vote for it in a special vote.
  • •At least 40% of all lettuce sellers must join the vote.
  • •For the law to pass, either: 65% of voters (who sold most of the lettuce last year) say yes, OR most voters (who sold 65% of the lettuce last year) say yes.

Example

Imagine 100 lettuce sellers in California. Only 50 of them vote in a special election.

The vote only counts if at least 40 sellers join. If 35 of the 50 voters sold most of the lettuce last year and they all say yes, the law starts. Or, if most voters sold 65% of last year’s lettuce and they say yes, the law also starts.
