§ 42950 Quality Standards For Produce

Key Takeaways

  • •You can't sell or ship fruits, nuts, or veggies if more than 10% are bad (like rotten, moldy, or bug-eaten).
  • •This rule only applies if there isn't already a special rule for that type of food.
  • •The food is checked by looking at a sample to see if it meets the 90% good rule.

Example

A farmer wants to sell a big box of apples at the market.

If more than 10% of the apples in the box are rotten or have worms, the farmer can't sell or ship them. Someone will check a sample of the apples to make sure at least 90% are good.
