§ 11501 Pesticide Use And Safety

This law sets out the goals for how the state will manage pesticides so that food stays safe, people stay healthy, the environment is protected, workers are safe, labels are followed, and safer pest‑control methods are used.

Key Takeaways

  • •Pesticides must be used safely to protect food, people, and the public.
  • •Harmful pesticides are regulated to keep the environment clean.
  • •Workers who handle pesticides must have safe working conditions.
  • •Only qualified, licensed people can apply pesticides under state control.
  • •Labels must be followed and information shared correctly.
  • •The law encourages using biological or cultural pest control before chemicals.

Example

A farmer wants to spray a weed killer on his corn field.

Because of this law, the farmer must be a licensed applicator, must follow the directions on the label, and should try non‑chemical methods first. If he uses a pesticide that is known to harm the environment, he may need a special permit or might be prohibited from using it.
