§ 14435 Election Document Acceptance Rules

This law says you can't discard any election paper just because it has a small mistake or isn’t perfectly formatted, as long as you can still understand what it says.

Key Takeaways

  • •Form errors don’t automatically throw out election lists, tallies, papers, or certificates.
  • •If the meaning of the document can be understood, it must be accepted.
  • •Applies to any election‑related paperwork, not just official certificates.

Example

A voter fills out a ballot but forgets to check one box, leaving a tiny stray mark on the paper.

Even though the ballot isn’t perfectly neat, the election officials must still count it because the voter’s choice can be figured out.
