§ 41600 School District Attendance Funding

Key Takeaways

  • •Schools get money from the state based on how many kids show up every day.
  • •Elementary schools include kindergarten through 8th grade, even if some 7th and 8th graders go to a different school.
  • •High schools include 9th through 12th grade, no matter who runs them.
  • •Unified schools (which have all grades) are treated like both an elementary and a high school for funding.

Example

A town has one school with kindergarten through 12th grade.

The state will give money to this school like it’s two separate schools: one for kindergarten to 8th grade and another for 9th to 12th grade. This way, the school gets the right amount of money for all its students.
