§ 35540 School District Boundary Alignment

Key Takeaways

  • •High school districts and unified school districts must cover the exact same area as the smaller school districts inside them.
  • •This means if a small school district is part of a bigger one, the bigger one can't leave any part of the small one out.
  • •The rule makes sure all the smaller school areas fit perfectly inside the bigger school area, like puzzle pieces.

Example

Imagine there is a small elementary school district called Sunnyvale. Sunnyvale is supposed to be part of a bigger high school district called Big Valley.

Big Valley must include every part of Sunnyvale. It can't leave out a neighborhood or a street. If Sunnyvale has a school on Maple Street, Big Valley's area must cover Maple Street too.
