§ 1006 County Board Member Eligibility

This law says any registered voter can run for the county board of education, except the county superintendent, their staff, or any school employee, and lets people propose changes to term‑limit rules through a voter initiative.

Key Takeaways

  • •Any registered voter can be on the county board of education, except the superintendent, their staff, or any school employee.
  • •The county can let voters start an initiative to add or remove term‑limit rules for board members.
  • •Any new term‑limit rule only works for future board members and only if a majority of voters approve it at a regular election.

Example

Maria, a registered voter, wants to run for the county board of education, but John, who works as a teacher in a district inside the county, cannot run because he is a school employee.

Maria can put her name on the ballot because she is just a voter. John cannot because the law says school employees are not allowed to be board members. If the county residents later want to change how many terms a board member can serve, they can start an initiative that voters will decide on at the next regular election.
