§ 4024 Prescription Drug Dispensing Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •Only certain people can give out medicine, like doctors, dentists, and some nurses.
  • •These people can give you medicine if they write a note (prescription) or tell a pharmacist to give it to you.
  • •Some nurses and other helpers can also give out medicine directly to you if they are allowed by their job rules.
  • •This rule makes sure only trained people can give you medicine to keep you safe.

Example

You go to the doctor because you have a bad ear infection.

The doctor writes a note (prescription) for ear drops. You take the note to the pharmacy, and the pharmacist gives you the ear drops. The doctor and pharmacist are following the rules about who can give out medicine.
