§ 4040 Prescription Order Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •A prescription must include the patient's name and address, the drug name and how to use it, the date, and the doctor's info.
  • •Only certain people like doctors, nurses, or pharmacists can write prescriptions.
  • •A prescription can be written, spoken, or sent electronically.
  • •Even if a prescription is missing some info, the pharmacist can still fill it if they can easily find the missing details.

Example

You go to the doctor because you have a bad ear infection. The doctor writes you a note to take to the pharmacy.

The note must have your name, the medicine name (like 'amoxicillin'), how much to take and when, the date, and the doctor's name and contact info. If the doctor forgets to write their phone number, the pharmacist can still give you the medicine if they can look up the doctor's number easily.
