§ 17403 County Support Reimbursement Claim

Key Takeaways

  • •If the government spends money to help someone who can't support themselves, and that person later gets money or property, the government can ask for some of that money back.
  • •The government can take legal action to get the money back if the person doesn't pay.
  • •If the person can't handle their own money or decisions, the government can ask a court to appoint someone to help manage their stuff.

Example

A person named John was very poor and needed help, so the government paid for his food and housing for a year. Later, John inherited a house from his family.

The government can ask John to pay back the money they spent on him using the money from the house he inherited. If John refuses or can't handle it himself, the government can go to court to get the money back or ask for someone to manage John's money and property.
