§ 8960 Warrant Payment Time Extension

Key Takeaways

  • •If the government owes you money from a warrant (like a check) but doesn't have enough money to pay you, the time limit to ask for that money doesn't start yet.
  • •You can still ask for your money later, even if a long time has passed, as long as the government didn't have the money to pay you during that time.
  • •This rule is only for warrants tied to certain government assessments (like taxes or fees).

Example

Imagine the government promised to pay a farmer for some crops they bought, but they gave the farmer a warrant (like an IOU) instead of cash. The government doesn’t have enough money in their account to pay the farmer right now.

Even if 10 years go by and the government still hasn’t paid, the farmer can still ask for that money later. The ‘time limit’ to ask for the money doesn’t start until the government actually has the money to pay.
