§ 8875 Tax Sale Certificates

Key Takeaways

  • •If you buy land at a sale because the owner didn't pay taxes, you get a paper (certificate) proving you bought it.
  • •You must take that paper to the county office and officially record it.
  • •This rule is for all buyers, even if the buyer is a special group like a drainage district.

Example

You buy a piece of land at a tax sale because the owner didn’t pay their taxes.

After buying, you get a certificate showing you own it now. You must go to the county recorder’s office and file that certificate so everyone knows you’re the new owner.
