§ 6455 Pre-1965 Dam Approval Requirement

• •If you own a dam or reservoir that was built before September 17, 1965, you must ask the government for approval right away.
• •This rule only applies to dams or reservoirs that fit the new definitions made in 1965.
• •If your dam already has a valid approval certificate from before September 17, 1965, you don’t need to do anything.

A farmer built a small dam on his land in 1960 to water his crops. In 1965, the government changed the rules about what counts as a dam.

The farmer must now ask the government to approve his dam because it was built before the new rules in 1965. If he doesn’t, he could be in trouble.
