§ 4013 Forklift Highway Use Exemption

• •Forklifts used only for moving stuff short distances (less than 1/4 mile) on the road don’t need to be registered.
• •This only applies if the forklift is mostly used for loading, unloading, or stacking things.
• •If you drive the forklift farther than 1/4 mile on the road, you have to register it.

A warehouse uses a forklift to move boxes from a truck to the storage area. The forklift crosses a small road between the truck and the warehouse, which is about 500 feet away.

Since the forklift is only driving a short distance (less than 1/4 mile) on the road and is used for moving boxes, it doesn’t need to be registered.
