§ 40609 Consolidation Election Notice Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •Before an election about combining areas (like cities or districts), the government must tell people about it.
  • •They have to put a notice in the local newspaper once a week for two weeks.
  • •The notice must either say where people can read the full plan (at the Orange County Clerk’s office) or include all the details of the plan in the notice.
  • •The people in charge (the board of supervisors) get to choose whether to share the full plan in the notice or just say where to find it.

Example

Imagine two small towns want to become one bigger town. The government has to tell everyone about the vote.

The town leaders must put an ad in the local newspaper for two weeks in a row. The ad can either say, 'You can read the full plan at the Orange County Clerk’s office,' or it can list all the rules of the plan right in the ad. This way, everyone knows what’s happening and can check the details if they want.
