§ 28912 Retirement Board Eligibility Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •The retirement board decides who can join the retirement plan and who gets benefits.
  • •The board makes the rules for how long you can get benefits and can change them if needed.
  • •Once the board makes a decision, it’s final—no one can change it unless they lied or were really unfair.

Example

If a firefighter gets hurt on the job and wants retirement benefits, the board decides if they qualify.

The board checks the rules and says yes or no. If they say no, the firefighter can’t get benefits unless the board was unfair or lied.
