§ 25363 Retirement Board Eligibility Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •The retirement board decides who can join the retirement system and get benefits.
  • •The board makes the rules about who can keep getting benefits and can change benefits for service or disability.
  • •The board's decision is final and cannot be changed unless there is fraud or a big mistake.

Example

If a firefighter gets hurt on the job and wants disability benefits, the retirement board decides if they qualify.

The board checks if the firefighter meets the rules for disability benefits. If they say yes, the firefighter gets the benefits. If they say no, the firefighter cannot get the benefits unless they can prove the board made a big mistake or was dishonest.
